Waterfront Tram Campaign

Trams, old and new

Auckland City officials will consider a push by transport campaigners trams to be included in the proposed $2 billion-plus Tank Farm waterfront development.

The Museum of Transport and Technology (Motat) says 4km of high-quality tracks and low-profile powerlines could be laid between Britomart and the Wynyard Quarter for about $16 million.

Campaign for Better Transport spokesman Cameron Pitches told the city's transport committee yesterday that electric "street cars" could be obtained for between about $500,000 and $2 million each, depending on whether they were heritage trams supplied by Motat or sleeker and more modern conveyances.

He said the tracks would be capable of carrying a mix of heritage and modern trams, which would be quieter than buses, emissions-free and "pedestrian friendly".

"It would be a quiet environment, pollution-free and that's something we haven't been able to achieve on our Queen St."...[more]

Airport Rail

The Campaign For Better Transport thinks it would be prudent to allow room for electrified rail extending south from Onehunga to Mangere and Auckland Airport.  However, Transit’s current plans will leave no room for a rail corridor on the south side of the bridge.

Newmarket Upgrade

News that work is about to commence on the Newmarket station is welcome, but could ARTA and Ontrack please put some thought into the purpose of redeveloping the station and tracks?

Ontrack appear to be addressing a couple of operational issues:

  • minimising signal and point changes
  • saving time by reversing West trains once instead of twice

However, CBT believe passenger needs also include:

  • delays in transferring between West and South trains, caused by timetable schedules not matching trains
  • duplicated West and South trains running between Newmarket and Britomart, causing congestion at Parnell and Britomart tunnels, which limits future increases in train frequency.

Electrify Now!

Right now, one of the most crucial decisions for the future of Auckland transport lies in the balance, and we need your help.  The CBT is promoting a petition to encourage the Government to commit to the electrification of the rail network in Auckland.

Just the Ticket

There is no way Auckland can hope for a world class public transport system unless people can purchase a reasonable priced ticket that will give them access to all services and allow them to transfer from one service to another with ease.

Bus 28

The 9 month struggle with the ARC, the Auckland City Council and Stagecoach to supply an additional 028 bus service from downtown Auckland to Richmond Road in Grey Lynn.

The 028 service is an excellent service home in the evening, as it avoids the congested K'Road route. However the last bus used to run at 5:08pm when a lot of people were still at work.

Finally in March 2000, an additional service was put on at 6:10pm. The preferred time of 5:40pm could not be met as Stagecoach were unable to supply a bus and the necessary driver at this time...
